Amalfi is an Italian town of 4,644 inhabitants in the province of Salerno in Campania. A flourishing maritime republic in early medieval times (along with Genoa, Pisa and Venice), it is also known for having given its name to the Tavole amalfitane, a maritime codex used throughout the Mediterranean area from the 12th to the 16th century. In 1997 the Amalfi Coast, of which Amalfi is the main geographical and historical center, was granted UNESCO World Heritage status.
