Posillipo already figures in the sources of the ancient Greeks, the first to inhabit the promontory then entirely covered by rocks and trees. There are Roman ruins near the shores as well as near the highest point of the hill; it is possible to see the remains of openings that ventilated the tunnel that led to the residence of Publius Vedio Pollione. The remains of an amphitheater are also present. With the end of the ancient age the population of Naples closed in the fortified enclosure and the whole area fell into decline, completely prey to barbarian invasions and neglect.
